Paua Shell Rings and Pendants
These beautiful rings and pendants have paua shell mounted in them. The paua shell from New Zealand is in a range of colours and the rings are in a choice of four different inside diameters. Paua is a variety of abelone, a mollusc that is unique to New Zealand. It lives on the rocky sea bed in fairly shallow water. Divers collecting are not allowed to use any diving equipment and can only free dive to collect them. The population appears to be stable and this seems like a sustainable way of harvesting paua.
The Maori have traditionally used paua shell in their art because of the shell's range of intense colours and its iridescence. They also regarded the flesh of the paua as a delicacy.
